500 years ago the world lost one of its greatest painters, sculptors, architects, designers, engineers and supreme draughtsmen, Leonardo da Vinci, who left a creative legacy of unequalled breadth and brilliance. The twelve 1st class commemoratives in this Royal Mail issue feature a selection of his drawings from the collection acquired by King Charles II in about 1670 and housed in Windsor Castle.
The BLCS 5000 cover complements the stamps with a reproduction of his design for a flying machine, a sketch of the great man and a pictorial Windsor hanstamp.
