It is estimated that at least 400 species of flora and fauna have become extinct in the UK since 1800 for a variety of reasons. Particularly badly hit have been butterflies with 24% of species disappearing and 22% of native amphibians. Several successful re-introduction programmes have brought species back to their native lands from other countries. Six of these species are celebrated in this superb issue: Osprey; Large Blue Butterfly; Eurasian Beaver; Pool Frog; Stinking Hawk's-beard and Sand Lizard.
This cover in our BLCS 5000 series features the Eurasian Beaver, two families of which were successfully re-introduced by the Kent Wildlife Trust. The cover image is complemented by a pictorial Beaver Road, Ashford handstamp.
