The Royal Air Force came into existence on 1 April 1918 when the aviation branches of the Royal Navy and the British Army were merged to form an independent military force. The growing role of airpower in warfare, particularly in the Great War was the chief inspiration for this move.
The RAF Centenary Commemorative Miniature Sheet features the world famous RAF Red Arrows Aerobatic Display team in action on a pair of 1st class NVI and a pair of £1.40 The stamps depict four Red Arrows manoeuvres: Flypast, Swan, Synchro and Python. The sheet selvedge shows part of the familiar RAF red, white and blue roundel.
