Royal Mail's first issue of 2017, Ancient Britain, shows how people lived in historic times. The stamps, in se-tenant pairs, show famous iconic sites and some of the most exceptional artefacts found across the UK. Overlay illustrations on the stamps show how people lived, worked and used the objects.
The stamps give a timeline across thousands of years of history, form a glimpse of Stone Age ritual 11,000 years ago, through the Bronze Age and into the Iron Age of some 300 BC.
Our Gold 500 cover features Maiden Castle, a hill fort in Dorset, as featured on one of the £1.05 stamps. The image has a 22 ct gold blocked border and the stamps are cancelled with a Maiden Castle pictorial handstamp.
